Worthing TOWN 3 MOSTYN RANGERS 5

Worthing MADE A MORE POSITIVE START IN THIS MATCH BETWEEN TWO EVENLY MATCHED TEAMS. THE EFFORT WAS FAIRLY FRANTIC IN THE EARLY STAGES, BUT YET AGAIN THE MIDFIELD WAS NOT HOLDING TO THEIR POSITIONS AND LARGE GAPS STARTED TO APPEAR. A STRONGER TEAM WOULD HAVE PUNISHED Worthing MORE COMPREHENSIVELY AS MOSTYN AT TIMES POURED THROUGH THE SPACES VACATED BY THE Worthing MIDFIELD AND PLAYERS FAILED TO TRACK BACK AND PUT THEMSELVES BETWEEN THE HOME GOAL AND THE ATTACKING TEAM.

HOWEVER IT WAS THE HOME TEAM THAT STRUCK FIRST WITH A SUPERB CROSS FROM JAMES HEALEY DEFLECTED INTO THE NET BY THE HEAD OF RHYS BILLINGSLEY. Worthing THEN GAINED IN CONFIDENCE AND BEGAN TO PRESS FORWARD WITH BEN COURT FIRING WIDE OF THE POST. THE OPTIMISM WAS SHORT LIVED WHEN A FAILED CLEARANCE LED TO A MOSTYN EQUALISER.

Worthing SOON RECOMPOSED THEMSELVES AND A GREAT CROSS FROM GEORGE KOWALIK WAS SWEPT INTO THE GOAL BY GEORGE WILSON IN HIS LAST COMPETITIVE MATCH FOR Worthing. BY GEORGE ! I COULD’NT RESIST THAT !

JORDAN GRAHAM, AN EX Worthing BOY WAS SOON POSING A PROBLEM TO THE HOME TEAM. A SHOT FROM JORDAN OVER THE BAR WAS SOON REPEATED MORE SUCCESSFULLY AFTER YET ANOTHER FAILED CLEARANCE. JUST BEFORE HALF TIME A DEFT PASS FROM BEN COURT WAS LIFTED OVER THE ADVANCING GOALKEEPER BY GEORGE KOWALIK AND ULTIMATELY OVER THE BAR.

YOU WOULD THINK THAT MUCH CONFIDENCE WOULD BE GLEANED FROM THE FIRST HALF PERFORMANCE, HOWEVER YET AGAIN THE HOME TEAM GAVE AWAY A CHEAP GOAL IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE RESTART. LEWIS BROWN MADE SEVERAL SAVES TO KEEP Worthing IN THE GAME BUT JORDAN GRAHAM PROVED TO BE TOO MUCH OF A THORN IN OUR SIDE AS HE CONTRIBUTED TO THE FOURTH GOAL AND SCORED THE FIFTH HIMSELF FOR THE AWAY TEAM. Worthing CONTINUED TO BATTLE TO THE LAST SECOND AND A CROSS FROM BEN COURT WAS SWEETLY SWEPT INTO THE NET BY GEORGE KOWALIK.

ENCOURAGEMENT CAN BE GLEANED FROM THIS PERFORMANCE AND PROVIDED THE MIDFIELD HOLD THEIR FORMATION BY ATTACKING AS A UNIT AND THEN TRACKING BACK AS A UNIT TO COVER THE SPACES, RESULTS WILL START TO GO Worthing’S WAY.

Worthing TOWN 2 KINVER COLTS 6

ONE OF THE LESSONS LEARNED BY BTFC TODAY WAS THAT YOU CANNOT WIN A GAME WITH ONLY 15 MINUTES POSSESSION AND TO HAVE MORE POSSESSION A SOUND STRUCTURE OF POSITIONAL AWARENESS, MARKING OF PLAYERS AND SPACES HAS TO BE IN PLACE.

THE MATCH STARTED REASONABLY WELL WITH GEORGE WILSON THROUGH IN ON GOAL ONLY TO BE TACKLED AT THE LAST MOMENT. HOWEVER, THE HOME TEAM WERE SOON BEHIND WHEN A CORNER WAS NOT CLEARED AND THE RESULTING SHOT WAS ALMOST PARRIED ROUND THE POST BY LEWIS BROWN. THE HOME TEAM TRIED HARD TO GET BACK INTO THE MATCH BUT LEFT VAST SPACES BETWEEN THE DEFENCE AND THE MIDFIELD. KINVER COLTS INTELLIGENTLY DROPPED AN ATTACKER INTO THIS GAP AND LEFT TWO STRIKERS TO BE MARKED BY FOUR HOME DEFENDERS. IT LOOKED LIKELY THAT MORE GOALS WOULD BE SCORED BY THE AWAY TEAM AS THEY EXPLOITED THESE SPACES AND THE POOR POSITIONAL PLAY BY THE HOME TEAM. IN THE FINAL TEN MINUTES OF THE FIRST HALF THIS ISSUE WAS RESOLVED BY PUSHING OLLIE BOURNE INTO THE SPACE BETWEEN THEIR MIDFIELD AND ATTACK AND THIS STARTED TO BEAR FRUIT WITH SOME GOOD INTERCEPTIONS BY OLLIE AND SOME EXCELLENT OUT SWINGING CROSSES, ONE OF WHICH ENDED UP AT THE FEET OF KYLE GITTINS WHO DRILLED THE BALL INTO THE NET.

ANY MOMENTUM GAINED AND LESSONS LEARNED WERE SOON LOST AS THE ZONAL DEFENCE DISAPPEARED AT THE START OF THE SECOND HALF AND FOUR QUICK GOALS WERE SCORED BY THE OPPOSITE NO 9. LESSONS WERE NOT LEARNED FROM THE FIRST HALF ! HEADS DROPPED AND ALTHOUGH SOME MOMENTUM WAS RE ESTABLISHED TOWARDS THE END OF THE GAME, GEORGE KOWALIK MISSED A PENALTY BEFORE KYLE GITTINS PULLED A GOAL BACK. A FINAL ATTACK FROM KINVER RESULTED IN ANOTHER GOAL AND THE FINAL SCORE AS 2 - 6.

SOME POSITIVES CAN BE GLEANED FROM THE GAME, PARTICULARLY THE LAST PART OF THE FIRST HALF. WITH KIERAN BRIDGEWATER AND GEORGE KOWALIK TOGETHER IN MIDFIELD THERE WAS MORE STRUCTURE AND A BETTER LEVEL OF PASSING. THE MIDFIELD MUST PLAY IN THEIR POSITIONS AND PROVIDE A LINK BETWEEN THE DEFENCE AND ATTACK. SO MANY TIMES IT HAS BEEN EVIDENT THERE WAS NO MIDFIELD AND POSSESSION THEN WAS GIVEN AWAY. THE DEFENCE MUST LOOK AT THEIR MARKING OF OPPONENTS AND SPACES INTELLIGENTLY. THERE WERE TIMES WHEN THIS HAPPENED EFFECTIVELY AND WITH TIME AND EXPERIENCE THIS WILL IMPROVE.
